He knocked an RBI single in the eighth, once again laying off bad pitches, and he is starting to look locked in. (He even stole a base!)
Of course, Yankees fans are aware of the only time in baseball history a team has come back after losing the first three games of a best-of-seven series. It was 2004 ALCS when the Red Sox did it to the Yankees en route to their first World Series title in 86 years.
Game 5 world series 2024
This is the Dodgers’ second title in five years — and their first in a full season since 1988. They will get even better as a coterie of pitchers return. The Yankees, meanwhile, will face the questions not only about how they blew the lead in Game 5 but whether Juan Soto — their best player all postseason — will return, as a jackpot awaits in free agency. — Jeff Passan

In the hours after the game 5 win, there were isolated incidents in Los Angeles, such as fans spray painting graffiti on an occupied Metro bus and then lighting it on fire, and others looting a Nike store in Downtown Los Angeles. Los Angeles Police called a tactical alert. A fan sustained a serious injury to his hand lighting a firework.
In the top of the eighth, the Yankees sent in reliever Tommy Kahnle, who had not allowed an earned run in eight postseason games. Hernandez once again led off with a single, Edman followed with a broken-bat infield single, and Will Smith followed with a four-pitch walk. With the bases loaded, Kahnle was relieved by Luke Weaver, pitching in his third straight game. Weaver allowed a Gavin Lux sacrifice fly that scored Hernández, tying the game at 6–6, which moved Edman to third. Shohei Ohtani next reached on a catcher’s interference, once again loading the bases. On the first pitch of his at-bat, Betts hit a sacrifice fly to score Edman, giving the Dodgers a 7–6 lead.
When the game 3 of the world series
Despite his big-game reputation, Buehler had an uncharacteristically difficult year in his first season back from Tommy John surgery. But in five scoreless innings in which he allowed just a pair of hits with two walks and five strikeouts, Buehler looked like his old self, with nice life on his fastball. He now has a 0.50 ERA in 18 career World Series innings.
The Dodgers last won the World Series in 2020 in the shortened Covid-19 pandemic season. While they were able to celebrate on the field at the time, there was no parade in the streets of LA. Manager Dave Roberts, who has been lauded for his work guiding his team of megastars throughout this season, celebrated with a rhetorical question.
Dodgers manager Dave Roberts told ESPN on Sunday that Ohtani was in good shape and “will be playing in game 3 tomorrow,” according to reporter Karl Ravech. The Japanese two-way player gave fans a fright when he slide hard trying to steal second base in the bottom of the seventh.
The last time the Yankees were down 2-0 in the World Series was 1996. Just like this year, that team had broken a 15-year World Series drought but had fallen in the first two contests. The 2024 version is hoping history repeats itself starting tonight.
After Freddie Freeman’s walk-off grand slam highlighted Game 1, defense took the spotlight in Game 2 as Yoshinobu Yamamoto shined in his World Series debut, leading the Dodgers to a 4-2 win over the New York Yankees.
There were still a couple more chances for the Yankees. The Dodgers turned to reliever Blake Treinen, their own stalwart bullpen arm who had come in an inning before, and he created and then got out of a jam.
