Slick, stylish, and rewarding, Hades is easily one of the very best roguelikes in recent memory. Supergiant delivers a beautifully polished dungeon crawler with smooth hack-and-slash mechanics that keep you eagerly wanting to return to try and escape the underworld. The variety of different weapons and godly buffs to play around with brings an element of strategy and excitement to each run as you try to fight your way through challenging enemies and bosses. At the heart of Hades, though, is Zagreus and a cast of loveable accompanying characters plucked from Greek mythology who are all brilliantly brought to life in a signature art style. Packed full of personality and finesse, Hades is a godly example of its genre in every sense of the word.
The punishing difficulty of Dark Souls and abstract lore building of Bloodborne meets one of the most ambitious open worlds ever created. Elden Ring used core narrative foundations written by George R.R. Martin to create a staggeringly ambitious RPG packed full of awe-inspiring sights, hard-as-nails bosses and juvenile tributes to all manner of finger-related activities.
The third-person survival game stars Joel and Ellie, forced together on an odyssey to find the cure for the zombie-like disease that ended the world. Skillfully emulating directors like Alfonso Cuarón, it offers a devastating tale with master-class motion-capture work. Violence has always been a critical part of gaming, but The Last of Us invites players to look beyond the actions to the characters’ intent. It can be easy to kill faceless goons, but when the enemies are seen as people, too, there’s a certain pang of guilt that most other games never instill.
Bloodborne’s intensely aggressive combat and near-on indecipherable web of Lovecraftian lore cemented director Hidetaki Miyazaki as one of the most influential developers of the decade. The game’s originality – it’s the only entry in our top 10 without a sequel or spin-off – further cements its mystique.

Scott Pilgrim vs. the World: The Game was first announced at San Diego Comic-Con on July 28, 2009. On June 8, 2010, Game Informer presented their first hands on, where it was revealed the game would be a timed exclusive for PlayStation Network, with an Xbox Live Arcade release at a later date. The first trailer for the game was released on June 11, 2010, which showed some of the stages in the game such as inside a club, on a street and noticeably inside a Toronto Transit Commission streetcar. The game makes various references to video games, such as River City Ransom, Mario, Kirby, Mega Man, and Guitar Hero. An early pitch video was revealed on August 11, 2010, which showcased even more retro graphics and direct parodies of classic games.

I also have to note that Scott Pilgrim vs. The World: The Game is the most prominent video game ever to be set in my hometown of Toronto, so it holds a special place personally. I can’t think of another game where you have to dodge TTC buses or collect toonies ($2 coins) to buy a poutine. My friends from New York, London, and Tokyo can play through huge, nearly photo-realistic versions of their homes, but I’m pretty happy to stick with what Scott Pilgrim has to offer. It’s certainly very Canadian.
Pre-orders became available for the PS4 and Switch versions for a limited time on January 15th. As Microsoft’s business model conflicts with that of Limited Run Games, a physical release for the Xbox One version was never made available.
